How much should I be eating?
I’m a 15 year old female

on a daily basis i eat:

breakfast: 2-3 slices of honey wheat light toast with margarine and an orange and raspberries

snack: about 15 almonds

lunch: a turkey sandwich on multi-grain/sourdough bread with reduced fat swiss cheese and carrits

snack: coffee with a cup of milk (skim mixed with a little whole milk), an apple with wheat germ, a small treat (today it was one girl scout trefoil cookie that only has about 30 calories)

dinner: tonight it was chicken lo mein with whole-grain noodles and vegetables (it was made with a few tablespoons of oil though). other nights it’s something such as baked chicken dishes or a really hearty bean and pasta soup

dessert: usually a scoop of frozen yogurt, sugar-free rice pudding, or a piece of dark chocolate, etc.

I run a few days a week and do a lot of walking.

I’m looking to maintain weight (117 pounds at 5′3.5") or lose only a little bit

How much should I be eating? And what should I be eating?

I hate it when girls obsess over every calorie and everything they eat has to be converted to "how much I have to burn". A little flab is cute! :D

B&A, Do you think death(s) in your novel adds more reality to it?
Like, to make the reader sure that it’s not a fairytale or an "all ends well" or a "they all lived happily ever after" kinda story, and strikes him/her with the reality of death.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons why Jo killed so many characters in HP…
Imagine if the Magical World got rid of Voldemort without losing any of it’s treasured men and women, it couldn’t have gone well.

So do you think it’s true that deaths add more reality to a fiction?

Often times it does, but not always.

Harry Potter is a great example of when death compliments the novel. Given its dark themes, it’s to be expected that many deaths would result from the war that’s been going on since the rise of Voldemort even before Harry’s birth.

However, in many cases death would only ruin the novel. A perfect example of such would be Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. The novel itself (not the zombies take on it) has absolutely nothing to do with the themes related to death (being about romance and society in 19th century England), so it would be completely unexpected and a really awful plot twist if some gunman just walked into Derbyshire at the end of the novel and decided to shoot Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

So my answer is that it depends on what novel you’re taking into consideration and if, given it’s themes, death would advance the plot or simply hinder it.

Edit: Another thing to take into consideration is *how* the deaths are unfolded. In my example with pride & prejudice, the way of death given was completely unrelated to the story. If hypothetically Lydia had some sort of cancer and it was pointed out sometime during the novel, then it would have been more realistic if she died from that than if Elizabeth had been shot by the gunman.

Joshms | Jul 25, 2009

I think it adds a little more reality to a book.
Robin | Jul 25, 2009

Yes i deffidently do.
Miss Carissa | Jul 25, 2009

Sure. Death is inevitable. We all face it eventually, and we watch others go through it during our lifetimes, too.

It wouldn’t be very realistic if the character didn’t experience any death.

Yes, I think that’s why JK killed off so many amazing characters. It really draws the reader in. It shows that we can’t always get what we want in life without paying for it.. in this case, in the pursuit of defeating Voldemort, Harry suffered many, many losses.

edit: I forgot to add – the character’s reaction to these deaths also make it more realistic. Emotions are key. It shows the reader that the characters – though they may be fictional – have feelings. Take a look at Harry’s reaction to the deaths of his loved ones / friends in the books. The emotions running during Sirius’s death was absolutely touching, as well as the battle in the final book. That’s the key to making a death feel realistic in a book. If you just kill someone off and carry on like nothing happened, the reader is likely not to feel anything.
Rae | Jul 25, 2009

it depends if you deal with it in the correct manner…if it’s not going to add to the moral of the story or doesn’t add any real meaning to it don’t kill somebody…every death must have meaning to or a reason for it…all of the hp deaths had a very good reason for them…i can give examples if you want/need some email me…all in all it’s better to kill nobody than to kill somebody just for the sake of killing them
ApocalypticZombie | Jul 25, 2009

Death, life, incomplete sentences spoken by characters, you name it. Of course no one wants to see a beloved character die but sometimes you just need more than a red shirt.
Mary S | Jul 25, 2009

They can, but unless they are the kind of faceless mass deaths or the book takes place in wartime, too many deaths are out of place. How many people did you know who died in the past year? I’m willing to bet the answer is less than four.
Cyra | Jul 25, 2009

Yes, I find death very important….in a series ….especially ones that mean a lot…and are moving…I don’t however, think the books should be smashed with deaths here and there…But I feel perhaps, either one…or three IMPORTANT characters or a handful of..Not that important…

It makes the book really sad and depressing (IMO-Death is my greatest fear) but, as such, it teaches lessons that cannot be taught otherwise…and most importantly, it teaches the reader "how to cope"…

On a similar yet not so important note, I felt Lupin’s death ENTIRELY unnecessary…I think the reasons are obvious to why you wonder I think this…the only thing I see is a sort of re-birth….as though a character, similar to Harry as a boy, lost his parents, but this time, was given a life full of love…not neglect…still I felt the series would have remained just as strong without his death….
Sorry for my little rant…

I think it would only be fair to star your death question, and I thank you for mine in return :)
Jade Lupin | Jul 25, 2009

Sometimes.
When I first started my novel my whole point was to prove that "not all stories have happy endings". But by the time I finished, it had completely changed and it was a happy ending. I think part of the thing is that I got too wrapped up in my characters and I wanted them to be happy. But I hope that with it’s sequel I can go with my original idea.
kenna 4 life | Jul 25, 2009

i think it adds depth to the novel. i like to read stories where the author isn’t afraid to kill their characters, like HP for example, just like you said. JK killed off alot of amazing characters in her series, but it wouldn’t have been the same without those deaths because it made the series what it is.
deaths of characters also gives novels that emotional climax that makes the book more realistic also like you said.
*ash* | Jul 25, 2009

Sometimes. My problem is that I basically refuse to give my characters happy endings, and my stories are usually pretty dark (I have a story that’s basically how the world fell into nuclear winter and the immediate aftermath, and another set in an alien laboratory). It’s inevitable that people are going to die, literally or metaphorically.

That said, I think a bunch of deaths in HP (and other stories that shall remain nameless *glares*) were pretty meaningless. Yeah, people are going to die, but it’s gotta MEAN something or else your audience is going to be bitter. If it doesn’t drive the plot or provide crucial character development or, hell, become something more than a couple of lines, or a cheap device, that’s pretty crappy writing.
Len | Jul 25, 2009

Yes, for Death is a reality which nothing can stop. And in those books with battles and wars, it is in fact stupid not to include death (killing all bad people while all the good ones remain alive- this is also stupid) because in real wars/ battles people DIE!
Headmaster of Hogwarts {RA} {DA} | Jul 25, 2009

Well it depends HOW it’s written. If the book goes:
The girl died because she was scared of the man, and so did the boy and the other girl. The other boy died because he was stabbed.
BORING!!!!
But I guess you’re right. On most occasions.
BitterEpiphany [loves.snivelly] | Jul 25, 2009

Yes, I think it does. Because in reality, I mean come on, death happens.
I mean sometimes when it’s my favorite character that dies I am very upset (Cinderpelt, Yellowfang, Sirius Black, Tonks, Lupin, Fred, Mr. Crepsley, to name a few)
but I understand. And maybe I’ll start throwing things but I still understand LOL
Loco Astrum ~**
Coby [Diehard Twihard] [RA] | Jul 25, 2009

Definitely. I thinks that’s one of the reasons that Breaking Dawn sucked so much. No one even got hurt.

And I do think that’s why Jo killed off a lot of people — I wanted to kill *her* for it (well, not really, but I was upset :D ) but it does kind of wake the reader up and make him/her realize that it’s not a happy ending novel/series.
Chloe [DA] | Jul 25, 2009

I’ve never killed off a character in my own stories, because I’ve never had to. My stories don’t call for that sort of unhappiness, if you know what I mean.

If the situation and plot call for that sort of a dramatic, I guess, turn out, then it should happen. It definitely does make it realistic, and the way Rowling went about it in DH was quite good. I mean, we’re talking about this huge world of magic up against the dark forces. It’s not likely that just three of them would die. So she had people like Moody, who we didn’t know very well, die. Which I’m okay with. And then she brought the awfulness closer to home with the deaths of Fred and Dobby and even Hedwig. Though I thought the death of Hedwig was sort of unnecessary, I understand why she did it.

As long as the deaths are tactfully done, they’re a great device to use in a story. Well, not *great.* Ack. You know what I mean.
Lyra [Be Back Soon] | Jul 25, 2009

no…. too much of deaths too make a story very unreal but yes there must be a few deaths of good AND bad characters

Your body will destroy it’s self. On a cellular level your cells will kill themselves to feed other cells, your body will essential destroy it’s self.

It will be difficult but talk to someone you trust and tell them how much pain your in, how your body feels and what you have done to it by not eating. You can get better but you need professional help. If you don’t want to tell someone who can get help for you, go to the hospital yourself.

Well…. what ya need to do is buy a good looking watch. i know of one its about 36 grand. it slowly injects fat and other nutrients into your wrist. the fat is made of a special formula that will slowly work its way around your body. you can still puke as much as ya want, but…. you’ll still gain some weight. and keep healthy. if this watch doesnt work out for you there is another one thats around 60 grand with more features. if you cant afford either of these all hope is lost. Health insurance should cover it. but dont check, just buy it. young boys between the ages of 13 and 17 should quench your thirst for throwing up.

Those with eating disorders have a confused mixture of feelings. They experience a number of different feelings as a need for food or starvation. Both may be used to remove unpleasant sensations. If they are also under pressure to be slim, the result may be anorexia or bulimia nervosa. They also lack normal awareness of internal signals. If they don’t get help to find these, they may become like sober alcoholics, but not basically cured.

In order to remove an eating disorder it is necessary to experience the unpleasant feelings which have been suppressed by overeating or starvation and this can be most unpleasant. It is also necessary to increase awareness of the body’s internal signals concerning hunger, satisfaction and other feelings and impressions in order to begin finding constructive solutions instead of gluttony and starvation. This is difficult for a person who e.g. has got used to suppressing feelings by eating junk food. Bulimics often feel hungry after a normal meal. It may take a considerable time for the body to learn to feel certain that it will get regular nutrition and need not believe that every meal is the last.

Starving anorectics can be extremely trying for the personnel when they must learn to eat again. A computer can function better sometimes as it cannot be provoked.

It’s hard not to notice that the same conservatives who don’t mind running down and insulting our President every time they get the chance – and that includes his wife and kids – get unbelievably thin-skinned when it comes to poor Sarah Palin. I don’t know if there could be a better example of pot meet kettle than this.

EDIT:
Elway, you would be very hard pressed to show one personal attack on Obama’s children.

***ARE YOU NEW AROUND HERE? I just did a search and picked three off the top. And I think that even though I’ve seen so many personal attacks here in YA against his family, we see less about the girls because they are so young. It isn’t as though they are Bristol’s age. Most of them that I see get deleted, but it doesn’t mean they weren’t asked.

And are you really going to try and claim that completely vicious and over the top attacks aren’t heaped on both the President and First Lady on a regular basis? You guys are unbelievable hypocrites that can dish it out but just can’t take it.

Since Democrats can’t find an issue Palin has been wrong on, you are forced into personal attacks.

***PALIN’S ANTICS have become the stuff of amusement. Call it anything you want, she is the publicity hound that always keeps on giving. She has been WRONG on many issues, but these questions today aren’t about her job performance are they? So is there some reason we should just be expounding on the job performance and not be enjoying this circus SHE has created? There was plenty of analysis of everything she was wrong about during the election. I’ll say what I want about the twit, call it personal attacks all you please.

The same thing happens (on a smaller scale) to anyone who rallies Republicans.

***She should have rallied more of them when she had the chance instead of alienating the base she needed so badly and ending up with a fringe following that will never give her the edge she needs. Have you missed the REPUBLICANS who ripped her a new one after the election and the cold shoulder she gets from the REPUBLICAN establishment even now?

Notice all the attacks calling into question, her intelligence? Sarah Palin beat Joe Biden in debates. Either she is smarter than Biden or Biden is very stupid. Take your pick.

***Since this is complete crap, I can’t even address this seriously. Biden won that debate, per the American people and per debate analysts. You are making pronouncements like she won that debate, and that she hasn’t done anything wrong. That’s opinion, and I can say that my opinion is that your opinion stinks.

How about her leaving Wasilla in deep debt? How about her stance on not letting raped and incest abused pregnant women get abortions? How about her claim that the VP is in charge of the Senate (one of my favorites)? Or the rallies she held where people yelled "Kill him" and "Obama’s a terrorist" while she stood there grinning like a shark?" It goes on and on and on.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/wo rld/us_and_americas/us_elections/article 5103014.ece

And here’s a link to a google search so you can finally learn who really won that debate:

http://www.google.com/search?client=safa ri&rls=en-us&q=Biden+wins+debate &ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

EDIT:
The majority of Americans disagree with you and Palin about abortion for women who were raped or pregnant by incest. Sorry but you and your hero have been judged wrong on that by the American people. Obama had lawyers dig up dirt on Palin? What bullshyt. Her dirt was there for all to see, and see it we did.

She’s a loser, that’s all there is to it. I almost feel sort of sorry for you over how delusional you are about this woman. Almost. lol And you are also wrong about her not hearing "Kill him" and the rest of it. I saw those rallies, and I saw her smile big as hell at the yells and the signs being waved. When you stop making excuses for this loser you’ll feel better, I promise.

Sarah Palin is intelligent , college educated, good looking , has a great husband, family and home.
She has contributed more to Alaska then most could hope for.
I think the women who bash her are jealous of her and the men who do feel threatened by her.
jewel_leeee | Jul 03, 2009

Not to worry ! Sarah will be just fine ! If you really want to get creeped out ? Watch this ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf0BxsVcg v4 This is what happens when you ignore GOD , history , hard work , common sense , and personal responsibility !
cshs1960 | Jul 03, 2009

No. As ever, she is seeking publicity and doesn’t really know what she is doing.
JohnsHopkins | Jul 03, 2009

No, but to keep on about her clearly reflect their lack of education.
shjOlds_442 | Jul 03, 2009

The Dems, media and libs that constantly attack Palin and her family remind me of nothing short of a dog that feels corned and attacks. These tactics are even too much for a typical lib to stand for. This is personal not political and why? Palin galvinizes the base so they feel threatened.

Libs say she is not experienced but accept Obama as a commuinity orgainizer.
Palin is pro life so NOW will not support her because abortion is the Holy Grail of NOW
Palin is pro-gun and has even hunted….need I say more?

If this is the standard libs want to use then fine, when the Reps get into power it is time to bring ethics charges against every Dem that holds office. It is time to air their dirty laundry and put them in jail for the corruption they engage in.

This is a sad time in America and there is no turning back now.

EDIT: as a conservative that constantly attacks Obama it is ALWAYS and ONLY on his policies and never about his skin color or his gender. The only name I call him is Marxist and this because he is.

Why are my car subwoofers humming?
ok i have 2 rockford fosgate p2 and a rockford amp, everything is hooked up right rcas are good and ive checked the ground its in a good spot i even moved it to make sure i get the same things. When i have my subwoofer setting on my head unit on they hum and sound like a jackhammer, and when they are turned off they still hum and when i shut my car off i get a big thump any ideas how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated.

i have subs too and they sound somewhat different than in the summer months because of it being hot and now with it being cold they dont bang as much more like shaking than banging or booming

ive even got out of my car and cranked up the stereo and it doesnt sound right, who knows, maybe it will change when it gets warmers

Are you sure the wires are good? Sounds like you might have a short that is arcing. Try other rcas if they are available. Where are you getting your power from, does it have its own circuit?
Kevin S | Feb 07, 2010

what gauge size you using for a ground try a thicker size add an extra ground to the headunit and if you have a pioneer head unit they usally have a pico fuse problem so ground the rca jacks
HOODAUDIO2 | Feb 07, 2010

it might be your head unit. in my first system i had nice everything but the head unit was junk(i didnt think it mattered). i had a slight humming and the thump when i turned the car off. once i bought a new a new HU the problem disappeared. im not positive but if your HU is a lower quality you might want to upgrade.
Chris | Feb 07, 2010

it could be because you ran your power wire and rcas on the same side…COULD BE
ddelz01 | Feb 07, 2010

even if your ground is good and the rcas are new it wont do you any good if theyre cheap. use oxygen free copper wiring kits with true gauge. twisted rcas work better. the insulation is also a thing to notice. dont settle for wiring kits that claim theyre one gauge but are half of that. use brands you can trust. tsunami, streetwires, stinger, jl audio, kicker, kinetic. these make true wiring kits and not cheap ones you find at the flea market. if you used a wire harness for your indash make sure the remote wire for the amp is connected to the remote wire from the indash its a blue and white striped wire. do not connect the remote to the key ignition wire which is a red because it will pick up noise engine. if the indash unit doesnt have the blue striped wire use the antenna power wire a solid blue wire.

i have a straight
with pocket 4’s who

me or my friend

Community: 3, 5, 6, 7, Q
You: 4, 4
Friend: 4, 8

Your Hand: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
His Hand: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

HE WINS. Why? He has the higher straight.

In Hold’em, it’s about the best FIVE cards. The hands I showed are the BEST you could have done with five cards. Any other cards DO NOT MATTER.

instantly_oatmeal | Jan 01, 2010

okay so both of you have straights but you have 4’s so you split. when you have straights pairs dont help you
Kelsey | Jan 01, 2010

I would have to say you cause you have both two 4’s and a straight. He only has a straight so that’s probably how I would interpret the winner.
Gary | Jan 01, 2010

First, if you are having to ask this question you should not play poker. Mad gab or pictionary come to mind. 8 high straight beats 6 high straight. having a pair doesn’t mean anything because you have the straight.
chaddad67 | Jan 01, 2010

You have an 7-high straight (34567), while he has an 8-high straight (45678 – the 3 is irrelevant). He wins.
